Collection: St Agnes Lighthouse Collection

The St Agnes Lighthouse was built in 1680 for Trinity House by Captain Hugh Hill and Captain Simon Bayly. It was originally lit by a coal fired brazier until it was converted to revolving oil lamps in 1790.

The light's visibility was seriously diminished in fog. This was eased somewhat by the addition of the Bishop Rock lighthouse from 1858. Then in 1910, Trinity House decided to replace the St Agnes lighthouse with a new lighthouse built on Peninnis Head, the southernmost point of St Mary's.

Since 1911, the light at St Agnes lighthouse has been discontinued, but its white-painted exterior has been maintained as a formal daymark, to guide mariners during the hours of daylight.

We have of course taken some artistic licence with this design, as the sea is a bit further back from the lighthouse which stands in the middle of the island!
